Your Friendly Neighborhood Umma

Welcome to My Little Corner of Korea ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท

A Korean mom, two wild kids, and one very beautiful country to show you.

Hi, I’m Umma Ma. I’ve lived several years in the US, a couple years soaking up the energy of Mexico City, fallen in love with the quiet elegance of Tokyo, and even managed a blissful stretch in Chiang Mai. I’ve eaten my way through a lot of the world.

But the place I call home is Seoul, Korea, and I want to share the beauty of this place with more people. So I started this blog to do just that.

Hi, I’m a Korean Mom Who’s Seen a Few Things

I’m currently living in Korea with my two kids — my 8-year-old, who already has strong opinions about which jjajangmyeon spot is best, and my 5-year-old, who mostly just wants to run around and eat ice cream. (Well, who doesn’t?)

We travel as much as we possibly can, and I drag them everywhere — palaces, markets, hiking trails, hole-in-the-wall restaurants. They complain. They also have the time of their lives.

"Living abroad gave me something really valuable: the ability to see Korea both the way a local sees it and a visitor sees it."

The first time you step into a centuries-old palace and then walk two minutes to grab a matcha latte — that contrast is wild. The way the subway is somehow both massive and totally easy to navigate. The fact that you can eat the most incredible meal of your life from a tiny stall at a market for the price of a coffee elsewhere. I take none of it for granted.

What This Blog Is (And Who It’s For)

This blog is for anyone who’s ever thought about visiting Korea but didn’t know where to start.

Maybe you’ve been watching K-dramas and wondering if Seoul really looks like that (it does, but even better in person). Maybe you’re a foodie chasing the best kimchi jjigae of your life. Maybe you just want to go somewhere new and genuinely surprising.

I’m going to take you through Korea the way I’d show a good friend around — no boring itineraries, no tourist traps unless they’re actually worth it, and absolutely no pretending that the food isn’t the whole point. We’ll start with Seoul and work our way out from there.

Think of me as your Korean friend who will tell you exactly where to eat, what to skip, and why you should absolutely rent a hanbok and take photos in front of a palace even if it feels cheesy. (It’s totally worth it!)

Coming Up First: Seoul

We’re kicking off with the city I know best and love most — Seoul. And because Seoul is genuinely enormous and endlessly layered, I’m covering it neighborhood by neighborhood:

  • Historic Seoul — palaces, hanok villages, and 600 years of history you can actually walk through
  • Modern & Trendy Seoul — Gangnam, luxury, and yes, that song
  • Youthful & Creative Seoul — Hongdae, street art, and the best night out you’ll have this year
  • Chill & Aesthetic Seoul — Seongsu-dong, Ikseon-dong, and the cool side of the city most visitors miss
  • Nature & Views — Namsan, Han River, Bukhansan

...And anything else you want to know about!

Let’s go explore. ✨
